Interactive Scrolls

The Interactive Scrolls give the visitor an opportunity to explore Hebrew scrolls with the support of the printed Hebrew text and English translation. The readings from the scrolls are also linked to help a visitor better understand the correlation between the Torah and Haftarah.

Salonika Torah

This is a complete scroll containing the five books of Moses from Salonika (ancient Thessaloniki) dating to the late 17th or early 18th century. Links will take the visitor through the traditional readings of the Torah throughout the year. This Torah is a living testimony to the once large and vibrant Jewish community from Salonika who were murdered in the Holocaust, with less than 2% surviving.

Salonika Haftarah

This is a complete scroll containing the readings of the Prophets which accompany the corresponding readings from the Torah. This is called the Haftarah. The scroll comes from Salonika (ancient Thessaloniki) dating to the late 17th or early 18th century. The readings are fixed by tradition and vary slightly between some religious communities. The links will take the visitor to the readings from the Haftarah and to the correlating passages from the Torah.
